More Resources

The following are some of my favorite learning resources, either for studying for Certification or just for general farrier education. Hopefully this is a helpful directory, but I wanted to put a lot of good information all in one place.

Books:

  • Dr. Doug Butler’s Principles of Horseshoeing (P3)

    • Primary source of info for AFA Certification

  • Chris Gregory’s Textbook of Farriery

    • Primary source of info for AFA Certification

  • Simon Curtis’ The Hoof of the Horse and also Farriery - Foal to Racehorse

    • Two awesome books about the hoof itself and also foal development and treatment of conformational faults

  • Heather Beauchemin’s The Hoof Book

    • Extremely accessible without being too technically dense, excellent low-stakes learning read

  • Jean-Marie Denoix’s The Equine Distal Limb

    • Lots of good pictures, will teach you the difference between “sagittal” and “transverse” very quickly

  • AFA Certification Study Manual

    • Has practice tests and lots of descriptions!
