More Resources
The following are some of my favorite learning resources, either for studying for Certification or just for general farrier education. Hopefully this is a helpful directory, but I wanted to put a lot of good information all in one place.
Books:
Dr. Doug Butler’s Principles of Horseshoeing (P3)
Primary source of info for AFA Certification
Chris Gregory’s Textbook of Farriery
Primary source of info for AFA Certification
Simon Curtis’ The Hoof of the Horse and also Farriery - Foal to Racehorse
Two awesome books about the hoof itself and also foal development and treatment of conformational faults
Heather Beauchemin’s The Hoof Book
Extremely accessible without being too technically dense, excellent low-stakes learning read
Jean-Marie Denoix’s The Equine Distal Limb
Lots of good pictures, will teach you the difference between “sagittal” and “transverse” very quickly
AFA Certification Study Manual
Has practice tests and lots of descriptions!
